Spinal cord injuries are very serious and have far reaching consequences. The most common consequence of a spinal cord injury is paralysis and loss of sensation. The spinal cord has various levels, and the levels relate to different body functions and sensations. An injury occurring at a higher level means more loss of function. It is important to understand the various consequences and complications so that one can gain the maximum level of recovery.

An injury to the spinal cord could lead to loss of bladder and bowel control. As a result patients tend to suffer from an increased risk of urinary tract infections. It can also result in loss of sensation which again can cause many complications. For example, a loss of sensation in the skin could result in a number of problems, especially when dealing with heat or pain. If something is too hot, the claimant will not be able to tell and this can cause further injuries, like burns, without any knowledge.
With the more severely injured claimants, they tend to be in bed or remain seated for large periods of time. This means that they are not able to move themselves and so cannot regulate their position from time to time. If this happens over a long period of time, bones can create pressure on the skin, causing bed sores. These bed sores can later become infected if not caught early and in the most extreme cases have led to sepsis and death.
